Good evening, felinity assembled!
Elvira Mistress of Felinity, here.
Welcome to Day 9 of the Poetry A Day Challenge by Robert Lee Brewer, of the wonderful Poetic Asides Blog, at Writer's Digest.
"Pick one prompt or use both…your choice!
- 1. Write a love poem.
2. Write an anti-love poem...or not!
Remember: These prompts are just springboards; you have the freedom to jump in any direction you want."
(The Day 1 poem, by Sneakers, is here)
I want to share a poem I wrote back in 2014.
In the aftermath of a kitten rescue we made I was inspired by the poetry of Edward Lear.
Feline Resignation or “Rutting Season” by Elvira Mistress of Felinity
I really hate to mention it,
But, I want to make it plain -
Very soon, you need to know,
It will be rutting season again! -
Tom after tom, they will pleasure me -
Siamese - Maine Coon - plain black -
Three times a year, you see,
I get this urge to hop into the sack!
They tempt me so, with looks so fair.
Their yowling so attracts me! -
Young - middle-aged - old - who cares! -
I welcome all comers with glee! -
It’s true this love is fleeting,
I brush each one off, after, like dust -
While there is no other meeting,
Raise our 3 offspring I must.
I bat my eyes, saying a sexy "meow",
And let them have their way! -
They say they love me so,
And this, too, I let them know -
For my part, I’m so very sick
Of acting the tart with all this lust -
To find a fix, that’s the trick!
Otherwise 9 kitten births a year I must.

Stay tuned for #10!
