Good morning, felinity assembled, Daddy Kiril Kundurazieff (AKA The Mad Houstonian) here.
For those, critter and human, new to this blog, I am the human companion to the chief writers of The Opinionated Pussycat, Elvira Mistress of Felinity, a 4 1/2 yr. old Tortie and her protegé, Miss Sneakers, who will turn all of one year old next month.
I am their official research assistant (I can go places they can't, plus, like the famous Doc Doolittle, I have unique language skills) and an occasional correspondent on the blog, as well.
The ballad below recently came into my possession due to circumstances shared in the next entry in this series of 5 blog posts.
It is my hope that you like it enough that your curiosity will lead you to follow the link at the end and read the, four part, story I have to share...and find both worth spreading the word about within your own circles.
One last note: It appears that the unknown writer of this ballad, in his/her choice of rhythm or meter, found inspiration in the "Streets of Laredo" ballads of Marty Robbins and Jim Reeves.
A Street in Laredo: A Ballad of the 8th Texian Tuxedo
By An Unknown Feline
As I pawed down a street in Laredo
Leaving town after a short stay,
I saw the body of a bold feline, who fought human sinnin’,
Fought human sinnin’ bravely one day.
"I hear tell that you are a curious kitty."
These words he did say as I slowly pawed by.
"Come lie down beside me and hear my brave story,
For I took on a bad woman, and today I must die."
"I was called the Texian Tuxedo and considered quite dashing,
'Twas known to rattle mean humans on many a day.
Fighting old Rosie, to free cats from her house,
I gave it my best, and I'm dying today."
"Oh, as the full moon rises slowly, climb a fence lowly,
And yowl loud and proud about how I righted a wrong;
Take me to an alley, and lay a blankie o’er me,
For I'm the Texian Tuxedo and I righted a wrong."
"Get six strong tom cats to drag me down there,
Get six pretty lady cats to bear witness to it all.
Put paws full of catnip all over my blankie,
Lay a fun toy beside me, preferably a small ball."
"Then lower your head slowly and purr for me lowly,
And give a wild meow as on my last journey I get along;
To the crows leave me for them to make a feast of me.
For I'm the Texian Tuxedo and I righted a wrong."
"Push to me that bowl of cold water.
To cool my parched lips", the feline then said.
Before I could do so, his soul had departed,
And gone to Rainbow Bridge – the Texian Tuxedo was dead.
As the full moon rose slowly, we climbed a fence lowly
And yowled loud and proud about how he’d righted a wrong.
For we loved the Texian Tuxedo, so brave, strong and handsome,
We all loved the Texian Tuxedo for righting a wrong.
