It's been on my mind, as well as Daddy Kiril's, since I began writing about the feral cat and dog crisis in Houston, over a month ago; What's the history of cats in Houston?
Something new for us to focus on, even as we (Daddy & I) consider how to take 12 years of blogging material (from 4 blogs) and turn it into e-books, even traditional paper books.
Houston has a history; it also has a problem.
The problem has to do with feral animals loose on its streets and in its bayous.
The history has to do with wondering when cats first appeared in the city, when the first ordinances, regarding animal control, appeared and when they began to focus on cats and dogs, when the first animal shelters appeared and when the first efforts at cat specific rescues began.
The history also has to do with when Houstonians began to breed and show cats and have related cultural activities, as well as when the first pet stores appeared.
How did these things evolve over time and impact life in the city?
How did the local media (print, radio, TV and even internet) cover it all?
Are there photos and other records of interest buried in dusty archives?
Has anyone written books about any of this?
Just asking....
Interesting post! Very good questions!!!!
