Good evening, Felinity Assembled, for anyone who missed the start of this series, you can read it here.
Tonite I want to share links to a declaration, a website and proposed legislation, related to the No Kill Shelter Movement, and what it hopes to accomplish.
You, and your Human can read them at your leisure, as they are all interesting, thought provoking, and well worth your time.
Nathan J. Winograd was the primary author of the Declaration of the No Kill Movement in the United States, witten in Sept. 2005.
As he explains: “No Kill is a revolution. And behind every revolution is a declaration—a statement of grievances, and a listing of rights and principles that underscore our great hope for the future. We assert that a No Kill nation is within our reach—that the killing can and should be brought to an end.
Join us in endorsing The Declaration of the No Kill Movement in the United States.”
No Kill sheltering models, based on non-lethal programs and services are cropping up all over the nation, and this declaration makes the case for ending population control killing methods of sheltering that have been the norm for over a century, and expanding methods that include ensuring public access to affordable spay/neuter services, allowing rescue groups to save animals on death row, and communitywide Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) for feral cats.
Whereas the No Kill Resolution has 15 Whereas's, now, therefore be it resolved, that I encourage you, and your Human, to read the Statement of Rights, Guiding Principles, and No Kill Standards, and ponder them thoughtfully.
Once you have done so please encourage your Human to consider joining over 30,000 animal lovers, animal advocates, and animal groups in the U.S. who have read, and signed the No Kill Declaration....Daddy Kiril has signed it this very evening.
Mr. Winograd also oversees something called the Rescue Five-0 campaign...
It is about reforming our nation's animal shelters, state by state by, as he writes, "passing and enforcing shelter reform legislation which mandates how a shelter must operate. The ideal animal law would ban the killing of dogs and cats, and would prohibit the impounding of feral cats except for purposes of spay/neuter and release."
One problem, and it's one worse than running out of kibble, or Kitty Litter...
Local Human governments may not pass such sweeping laws at this time in history.
Sooo...Something called the Companion Animal Protection Act (CAPA) was written as “model” legislation to provide animals with maximum opportunities for lifesaving.
Mr. Winograd explains the reasoning behind this idea, and points out that it's not meant to be complete, or end the need for other protection laws, in this essay.
You can read CAPA (In a PDF) at the Rescue Five-0 Website.
Rescue Five-0 is a "three-part nationwide campaign to rescue animals from death in the shelters and pounds of all 50 states by reforming our nation's broken animal shelter system":
1. Campaign for new leadership in local shelters.
2. Political advocacy at the local level.
3. Legislative changes at the state and local level.
Visit Rescue Five-0, and learn more.
These websites, admitedly, have a lot of information but, with adequate naps, and snoozes you, and your Human, can explore it all at your leisure, as we are with Daddy (One, or Two, Weeks of just skimming thru doesn't do the material justice, and we are still reading Mr. Winograd's 2 great books, as well.)
Next up will be a look at a few other websites.
FNN SPECIAL REPURRT: The No Kill Animal Shelter Revolution 6
I can't even handle reading about shelter numbers any more.
The death rate is too high!
It used to make me sick knowing most - sometimes all - of the animals I took photos of, to try to find homes for, were killed.
And the word is killed, not euthanized, no matter what Animal Control and government say.

It's sad there didn't seem to be news coverage of this historic Building a No Kill Community event.
I've searched a few news sites and so far, nothing.
Shameful.
The TV news mentioned the comic book event with costumed people that was in the same facility, but the real heroes were next door!
New groups are forming in Canada.
News about the Nova Scotia SPCA using Nathan's No Kill Equation to reach an 89 % save rate in 2011 should be prompting people to ask why their SPCAs and communities aren't doing the same.
Why should taxpayers pay to kill pets when there are now more than 30 open-admission no-kill communities? It's been proven that if more life-saving programs and services are put into place, more lives are saved.
It's time to stop accepting excuses and start demanding leadership, accountability and the No Kill Equation!

Great report. We support no-kill as well.
It's always heartbreaking to read about pets about to be killed. We're especially sensitive to the plight of black cats who have a hard time getting adopted as it is.
The Carnival is up. Thanks for participating!
