Hello, honey, Elvira Mistress of Felinity here. I'm more than just a great looking feline, I'll have you know! Bold, fresh, cuter than a speckled pup, and the most delightful pussycat in the world! You can call me Miss Elvira for short; just don't call me late for dinner, treats, a nap, or a snooze!
Welcome to the Elvira Factor! You are about to enter the no bull zone! Grab your tails, felinity assembled; it's going to be a bumpy ride!
Oh, my Ceiling Cat! August 2014? Has it been THAT long since the Factor last appeared? Did anyone miss my work?
If so, I am grateful for the support and humbly apologize. A lot has been going on since that Summer and while we are proud of much of what we have written here, we and Daddy Kiril let the difficulties of his life divert us all from more of the creativity we are known for.
We hope to do better going forward.
For those curious kitties out there unfamiliar with the Elvira Factor and its unique brand of journalism I invite you to explore and leave comments to, the archive.
In February 2010, with this blog, barely a month old, Mr. Nikita wrote one of the best and most important entries in his distinguished career...
In many parts of the world, some humans have taken the notion of Healthy Living Thru Cats to a strange extreme.
Ever hear of The Gastronomical Festival of the Cat, aka the 'Massacre of the Moggies' in Peru?
Did you know that in southern China and northern Vietnam some people consider Cat flesh a good warming food during winter months?
Did you know there is a website called How to Cook a Cat?
Yes, felinity assembled, some humans compare the raising and eating of cats to raising and eating pig, cow, fish or chicken.
While a few links in Nikita's piece are inactive that takes nothing away from what he accomplished and makes it no less an important, educational, piece to read:
In an update to Nikita's old piece, I found an interesting piece by Nina Golgowski, of the NY Daily News, in October 2013:
( Before you proceed to the above 2 stories, dear fellow felines... BE WARNED! There is a reason why this story is important for felinity assembled, and our own health, and sanity. Also, please be sure to read the UPDATE, at the end - An important, thought-provoking, response by the legendary British Cat known as Whicky Wuddler - RIP ;-D )
Next up is...My Word!
The word for this edition is "ban".
The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word this way:
VERB - Officially or legally prohibit (something). Officially prevent (someone) from doing something.
NOUN - An official or legal prohibition. An official exclusion of a person from an organization, country, or activity.
Let's move on to the Knucklehead of the Week:
Any human, anywhere, who STILL thinks that eating Pussy(cat) is a cool thing to do in this day and age. :-D
I'm in no mood to be picky and specifically name just a few names, or be accused of discrimination by excluding anyone who deserves to be called a Knucklehead.
Kuomintang Legislator Wang Yu-min and the Legislative Yuan, of the nation of Taiwan, for following her lead.
From an article in the China Post:
"Taiwan has passed landmark animal protection laws imposing fines for the consumption of dog and cat meat as well as jail time for those who kill and torture animals.
The Animal Protection Act amendments approved by the Legislative Yuan on Tuesday punish the sale, purchase or consumption of dog or cat meat with fines ranging from NT$50,000 to NT$2 million.
The amendment's sponsor, Kuomintang Legislator Wang Yu-min, said that while some localities already had measures banning dog and cat meat consumption, national legislation was needed.
She noted that Taiwan was the first country in Asia to pass such legislation."
According to the article, the amendments still need to be signed off on by the Cabinet and the Presidential Office and would then take effect by as early as the end of this month if enacted.
Other animal cruelty laws were approved as part of this effort and according to Yahoo News 7 Australia, "the amendments come in response to several high-profile incidents of animal cruelty" in the nation.
According to CTV News, the new president of Taiwan is a cat lover, living with 2, and added 3 dogs after the election.
Also, "while consumption of dogs and cats was never widespread in Taiwan, the amendments point to increasing concern for the treatment of animals on the island, where many residents lavish money and attention on their pets amid a plunging birthrate" among humans.
2 interesting facts come to light, though, in a piece on this news from The Guardian:
- Taiwan PREVIOUSLY banned the sale of dog and cat meat in 2001, and some local governments had prohibitions on consumption.
- Hong Kong banned the slaughter and sale of dog and cat meat while under British colonial rule but did not specifically outlaw consumption.
Thank you, one and all!
Well, that's it for this edition.
